There's a long-running argument over whether the whoopie pie was born in Maine or Pennsylvania. Spend one Saturday in Dover-Foxcroft and you'll know where Mainers stand. The Maine Whoopie Pie Festival returns to the Piscataquis Valley Fairgrounds on Saturday, June 13, 2026, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. — rain or shine.

What the festival is

Since 2009, the Maine Whoopie Pie Festival has gathered the best bakers from around New England to compete for prizes and bragging rights over Maine's Official State Treat (made official in 2011). Produced by the Center Theatre for the Performing Arts, it's the largest annual event in Piscataquis County. At the festival you exchange tokens — wooden nickels — for samples of more than 100 varieties of whoopie pie. Find your favorite, then buy a few for the road or the freezer.

What to expect

  • 100+ vendors offering whoopie pies, food, crafts, and art
  • The "Earn Your Whoopie Pie" 3K race/walk kicking off the day at 8 a.m.
  • Whoopie pie eating contests, rides and games for kids, and live music
  • A car show, raffle, kids' zone, and home show expo

Admission is $6 per person; kids 12 and under are free. Tokens, VIP parking, and entrance passes can be purchased in advance through the organizer's online store. Per the fairgrounds, only certified service dogs are allowed on site.

Planning your visit

Dover-Foxcroft is the gateway to the Maine Highlands and the Moosehead Lake region. The fairgrounds are at 77 Fairview Avenue. Make a weekend of it with Sebec Lake, Appalachian Trail hikes, or a show at the Center Theatre in town.
