Belchertown Fair 2026: A Visitor's Guide to One of Massachusetts' Best Small Fairs

April 18, 2026J Tarbox2 min read

The Belchertown Fair is the kind of fair that people who love fairs actually love. There are no megacoasters or corporate food trucks. Instead, you get a real agricultural fair run by real community members — livestock exhibits, a vegetable contest, a baking competition, a parade down Main Street, and enough fried dough to fuel the whole weekend.

Held annually in late September, the Belchertown Fair bridges the gap between the August agricultural fairs and the October headliners like Topsfield and the Big E. Its timing — late enough for foliage to start but early enough for warm afternoons — makes it one of the most pleasant fairs on the Massachusetts calendar.

When and Where

Dates: Friday, September 25 through Sunday, September 27, 2026 Location: Belchertown Fairgrounds, Belchertown, MA Admission: Check the fair's website for current pricing

Belchertown is in the Pioneer Valley, about 20 minutes northeast of Springfield and 30 minutes north of the Big E grounds in West Springfield. If you're planning a late-September fair weekend, combining Belchertown with a visit to the Big E (which will be in full swing by then) makes for an excellent two-fair trip.

What to See

Agricultural exhibits are the heart of the Belchertown Fair. Expect cattle and dairy judging, oxen pulls, sheep and goat shows, and the kind of rabbit and poultry exhibits that let kids get up close to animals they've only seen in books.

The vegetable and flower competitions are classic New England fair fare — oversized pumpkins, perfect tomatoes, and sunflowers taller than the judges. The baking competition draws local home bakers who take their pie and bread entries very seriously.

The parade is a Belchertown tradition. Local fire trucks, school marching bands, 4-H groups, and community floats process through town. It's small-town New England at its best.

Entertainment typically includes live music on the main stage, a demolition derby or truck pull (check the schedule — these events usually sell out of grandstand seating), and kids' activities spread across the grounds.

Tips for Your Visit

Arrive early on Saturday for the best parking and the fullest schedule of events. Saturday is the biggest day at most small fairs, and Belchertown is no exception.

Bring cash. Smaller fairs like Belchertown often have food and vendor booths that are cash-only. The ATM line gets long by mid-afternoon.

Walk the barns first. The livestock exhibits are quieter in the morning before the afternoon shows start. It's also cooler in the barns earlier in the day.

Plan for the weather. Late September in the Pioneer Valley can swing from 75°F and sunny to 55°F and drizzling. Layers and comfortable shoes for walking on grass and dirt are essential. Our guide to what to wear to a New England fair has more tips.
