Kennebunkport Christmas Prelude 2026: Tree Lightings, Santa's Lobster Boat, Parking and the Full Schedule
The Kennebunkport Christmas Prelude fills Kennebunkport and neighboring Kennebunk with holiday events for eleven days in early December. The organizer calls 2026 the Prelude's 45th year. The schedule includes two tree lightings in Dock Square, Santa arriving by lobster boat, candlelight caroling at the Franciscan Monastery, fireworks over the cove and a street festival that closes the roads from Dock Square to Lower Village.
Most of it is free. Here is what the organizer has published for 2026 and how to plan around the crowds.

Dock Square tree lighting
The tree in Dock Square is lit twice. On both Friday, December 4 and Friday, December 11, caroling starts at 5
p.m. and the tree is lit at 6 p.m. On December 4 the Kennebunk High School Chamber Choir leads the caroling.Later on December 4, Cape Porpoise lights its Lobster Trap Tree at 7 p.m., with caroling by The Church on the Cape Choir and refreshments at the Cape Porpoise Fire Station.
If you want the full-evening version, pick December 11. That night the tree lighting sits between the street festival and the fireworks.

Santa's lobster boat
This is the Prelude's signature moment. On Sunday, December 6, Santa travels up the Kennebunk River between about 12
and 12 p.m. and docks at The Nonantum Resort at 1 p.m. The organizer suggests watching from the Mathew Lanigan Bridge or along Ocean Avenue.At the Nonantum, families can meet Mr. and Mrs. Claus, get a complimentary photo, make holiday crafts and have a warm drink. It's free and open to the public.
The street festival and fireworks on December 11
Friday, December 11 is the busiest night. The Prelude Family Street Festival starts at 4 p.m. with strolling carolers, live music from Women of Note and Sir Don, food vendors and ice carving.
The organizer's FAQ says streets are closed to all vehicles from 3 to 7 p.m., from Cooper's Corner in Kennebunk through Dock Square. The tree lighting follows at 5
, and the fireworks go up at 6. Good viewing spots named by the organizer are the Mathew Lanigan Bridge, the South Congregational Green and the Lower Village bridge area.After the fireworks, the Upper Ocean Avenue Festival at 128 Ocean Ave. has live music, a fire pit, lobster rolls and chowder. A free RideMaine shuttle runs on Ocean Avenue, just around the corner from Dock Square.
Parking and shuttles
Parking is the hardest part of the Prelude, so plan it before you leave home.
The organizer keeps a parking and shuttles page. As of late September 2026 it still showed last year's (2025) dates, so check back for the 2026 version. Last year's page listed:
- Dock Square municipal lot (11 Dock Square): paid, limited, and it "fills up early"
- Fire Station municipal lot (30 North St.): free, about a five-minute walk to Dock Square
- Paid off-site parking with a shuttle into Lower Village on the busiest days
- A free intown trolley and RideMaine shuttles on select days
For 2026, the schedule already lists a free RideMaine shuttle from the Lower Village Marketplace to Mother's Beach from 4 to 6 p.m. for the Lighthouse Lighting on December 12. There's no parking on the Monastery property for the candlelight caroling.
On-street parking is limited. Obey the posted no-parking signs.
Practical tips
- Restrooms: the organizer says it has added 10 portable bathrooms across Lower Village, Dock Square and Cape Porpoise for 2026.
- Shopping: most shops in Dock Square, on Ocean Avenue and in Lower Village stay open until 8 p.m. or later on Prelude weekends.
- Weather: events are rarely cancelled. The organizer says everything runs as scheduled unless there's a major blizzard or safety issue.
- Alerts: text PRELUDE to 226787 for safety notifications.
- Dogs: the Pooch Parade on December 13 welcomes well-behaved dogs in holiday attire. Registration is required and opens October 15.
- Staying over: local lodging guides note that area inns offer Prelude specials and packages. Book directly with the inn.
