New England Seafood Festivals 2026: Lobster, Oyster, Clam & Chowder Guide

If there's one thing New England does better than almost anywhere, it's seafood by the water — and from late spring through fall, the region throws a festival for nearly all of it. Lobster in Rockland, oysters in Freeport and on Long Island Sound, fried clams in Yarmouth, chowder in Portsmouth, and big waterfront seafood blowouts up and down the Rhode Island and New Hampshire coasts.
This guide rounds up the major 2026 seafood festivals across New England — when they are, where they are, and what each is known for — so you can build a coastal summer around them. Most are family-friendly, many are free, and all of them put the catch front and center.
Seafood festival season at a glance
The season runs May through October, clustering hardest in July through September:
- May — Newport Oyster & Chowder Festival (May 16–17) kicks things off on Bowen's Wharf in Newport, RI — free to attend.
- June — the WOKQ Chowder Festival (June 6) at Prescott Park in Portsmouth, NH, then the Maine Oyster Festival (June 27–28) in Freeport.
- July — the big Maine month: the Yarmouth Clam Festival (July 17–19) and the marquee Maine Lobster Festival (July 29–August 2).
- August — the Charlestown Seafood Festival (Aug 7–9) in RI, the Winter Harbor Lobster Festival (Aug 8) Down East, and the Milford Oyster Festival (Aug 14–15) in CT.
- September — a packed weekend: the Hampton Beach Seafood Festival (Sep 11–13) in NH, the Norwalk Oyster Festival (Sep 11–13) in CT, and the Rhode Island Seafood Festival (Sep 12–13) in Providence.
- October — the season finishes strong with the Wellfleet OysterFest (Oct 17–18) on Cape Cod and the Bowen's Wharf Seafood Festival (Oct 17–18) back in Newport.
The marquee events
Maine Lobster Festival — Rockland, ME (July 29–August 2). The big one. Five days on the working waterfront at Harbor Park, built around freshly cooked Maine lobster, with a midway, marine tent, cooking contests, and live music. If you go to one New England seafood festival, this is the bucket-list pick — see our full Maine Lobster Festival visitor's guide.
Yarmouth Clam Festival — Yarmouth, ME (July 17–19). A beloved three-day street festival along Main Street celebrating Maine's clams — fried, steamed, and in chowder — alongside a parade, a road race, crafts, and amusement rides. Free to attend; see our Yarmouth Clam Festival guide.
Wellfleet OysterFest — Wellfleet, MA (October 17–18). Cape Cod's great fall oyster celebration, drawing some 20,000 people to downtown Wellfleet for fresh-shucked oysters, the famous Oyster Shuck-Off, and a fine art and craft fair — see our Wellfleet OysterFest guide.
Hampton Beach Seafood Festival — Hampton, NH (September 11–13). New Hampshire's signature seafood weekend on the boardwalk, with dozens of restaurants serving the coast's best and live entertainment over the water.
Oysters: a New England specialty
New England's oyster scene gets its own circuit. In Maine, the Maine Oyster Festival (Freeport, June 27–28) is a free celebration of the state's growing aquaculture industry. On Long Island Sound, Connecticut anchors two of the region's oldest: the Milford Oyster Festival (August 14–15) and the Norwalk Oyster Festival (September 11–13), the latter run by the Norwalk Seaport Association. Rhode Island opens and closes its season at Bowen's Wharf with the Newport Oyster & Chowder Festival (May) and the Bowen's Wharf Seafood Festival (October). And on Cape Cod, the famed Wellfleet OysterFest (October 17–18) is the region's biggest — a two-day street festival and the marquee oyster event of the New England fall.
Rhode Island: the seafood-festival state
For its size, Rhode Island punches hardest. Beyond the two Bowen's Wharf events in Newport, the Charlestown Seafood Festival (August 7–9) at Ninigret Park and the Rhode Island Seafood Festival (September 12–13) at India Point Park in Providence both draw big waterfront crowds. They're also covered in our Rhode Island fairs and festivals guide.
Tips for visiting
Go hungry and bring cash. Seafood festivals are food-first; many stalls move faster on cash, and the point is to graze.
Check admission before you go. Several are free — the Maine Oyster Festival, Winter Harbor Lobster Festival, Newport Oyster & Chowder, and Bowen's Wharf Seafood Festival. Others charge a modest gate: the Milford Oyster Festival runs about $8, and the WOKQ Chowder Festival is around $25. For the rest, check the official site for current pricing and hours.
Arrive early for the marquee dates. Rockland during the Maine Lobster Festival and the September seafood weekend fill up — plan parking and lodging ahead.
Make it a coastal road trip. The calendar is spread along the coast from Down East Maine to Long Island Sound, so a single July or September weekend can easily cover two or three.
