The Best Shows in Maine for Boat Owners and Sailors

April 7, 2026Admin User - J Tarbox4 min read

Maine has more coastline than California. That's not a trivia question — it's the reason the state supports one of the richest boating calendars in the country. Whether you're shopping for a new center console, racing a classic wooden sloop, or just want to stand on a dock and watch schooners parade into harbor, Maine has a show or event for you almost every month of the year.

This guide covers the major boat shows, regattas, and maritime festivals that matter most to boat owners and sailors in Maine. Some are buying events. Some are racing events. Some are pure spectacle. All of them are worth your time if you love being on — or near — the water.

Winter and Spring: The Indoor Boat Shows

Maine's boating season may not start until the ice is off the water, but the buying season kicks off months earlier. The state's two major indoor boat shows give you a chance to climb aboard new models, talk to dealers, and plan your season while there's still snow on the ground.

The Portland Boat Show (late February – early March) is the largest indoor boat show in the state. Held at the Portland Sports Complex, it features a wide range of powerboats — fishing boats, pontoons, bowriders, wakeboard boats, and cruisers — plus marine electronics, accessories, and service providers. It's a dealer-driven show, so expect competitive pricing and show-only specials. Free parking and an on-site restaurant make it an easy day trip.

The Augusta Boat Show (April) at the Augusta Civic Center is a newer addition to the calendar — or more accurately, a revival. After years off, the show returned in 2026 with a fresh format and strong dealer participation. Its mid-spring timing means you can buy a boat and be on the water within weeks rather than months.

For those in northern and eastern Maine, the Eastern Maine Sportsmen's Show in Orono (March) at the University of Maine Field House includes boat and marine exhibits alongside fishing, hunting, and outdoor recreation gear.

Summer: In-Water Shows and Maritime Festivals

Once the boats are in the water, Maine's show calendar shifts from buying to experiencing.

The Maine Boat & Home Show in Rockland (August 7–9, 2026) is the flagship event — the largest in-water boat show north of Newport, Rhode Island. More than 60 boats are displayed in the water and on land at Harbor Park on Rockland Harbor. It's not just a boat show, though. The "Home" in the name is real: you'll find artisan furniture, coastal home goods, art, and Maine-made products alongside the boats. Admission is $15 for adults, and kids under 12 get in free. If you only attend one boating event in Maine all year, this is the one.

Windjammer Days in Boothbay Harbor (June 21–27, 2026) is a week-long celebration of Maine's tall ship heritage. Now in its 64th year, the festival features windjammer parades, harbor tours, live music, a tug-of-war across the harbor, and enough maritime pageantry to fill a week. It's more festival than boat show, but if you sail or have any affection for traditional vessels, it's unmissable.

The Racing Calendar: Regattas Worth Watching (or Entering)

Maine's midcoast is one of the great sailing grounds in the country, and the summer regatta calendar reflects that.

The Great Schooner Race (July 3, 2026) in Penobscot Bay is North America's largest annual gathering of traditional tall ships. At least twelve schooners line up for a single spectacular race. Even if you're not racing, watching the fleet under full sail from shore or from a spectator boat is one of the great sights in New England sailing.

The Camden Classics Cup (July 23–25, 2026) brings classic yachts — from daysailers to superyachts — to Camden Harbor for three days of racing and social events. Now in its 10th year, the event has become a highlight of the classic yacht calendar. There's also a youth regatta with free entry, making it a great introduction for young sailors.

The Boothbay Harbor Yacht Club Regatta and Shipyard Cup (July 18–19, 2026) is the 52nd running of this classic event, featuring PHRF handicap racing, one-design classes, and several divisions of classic yachts. It kicks off the midcoast racing stretch that continues through Camden and Castine.

The Eggemoggin Reach Regatta is one of the most scenic races in the state, running along the reach between Deer Isle and Brooklin with views of the Camden Hills and the islands of Penobscot Bay.

Planning Your Season

The beauty of Maine's boating calendar is that you can follow the season from a heated convention center in February all the way to a September sail-in at Brooklin. Here's the rough timeline:

  • February–March: Portland Boat Show, Eastern Maine Sportsmen's Show (Orono)
  • April: Augusta Boat Show
  • June: Windjammer Days (Boothbay Harbor)
  • July: Great Schooner Race (Penobscot Bay), Boothbay Harbor YC Regatta, Camden Classics Cup, Eggemoggin Reach Regatta
  • August: Maine Boat & Home Show (Rockland)
  • September: WoodenBoat Sail-In (Brooklin)

Whether you're in the market for a new boat, looking to race, or just want to soak in Maine's maritime culture, there's something on this calendar for every month of the boating season — and a few months before it starts.
