The Portland Boat Show: Maine's Biggest Indoor Boat Show

April 7, 2026Admin User - J Tarbox2 min read

If you're in the market for a boat in Maine, the Portland Boat Show is where the season starts. Held every year in late February at the Portland Sports Complex, it's the state's largest indoor boat show and the first real chance to see new models, compare options side by side, and talk pricing with dealers before the spring rush.

What You'll Find on the Show Floor

The Portland Boat Show is a dealer show, which means the floor is packed with actual boats you can climb aboard. The range is broad — center console and walkaround fishing boats, bowriders, cuddy cabins, cruisers, pontoon boats, wakeboard boats, and wake surf boats all make an appearance. If it floats and has an engine, there's a good chance it's here.

Beyond the boats themselves, you'll find marine electronics vendors, trailer companies, marine insurance providers, canvas and upholstery shops, and service outfits. It's a one-stop-shop for everything you need to get a boat ready for the water.

Why the Timing Works

Late February might seem early, but it's actually the sweet spot for boat buying in Maine. Dealers are motivated to move inventory before the season starts, which means show-only pricing and incentives that aren't available once the weather warms up. Manufacturers have their new model-year boats ready, and you get first pick before the popular configurations sell out.

If you buy at the show, you've got time to handle registration, insurance, and any rigging or customization before launch day. Wait until May and you're competing with everyone else for marina time and dealer attention.

Practical Details

The show is held at the Portland Sports Complex at 512 Warren Avenue in Portland. The venue has the largest display area of any local boat show, and parking is free — which is not something you can take for granted in Portland.

Tickets are available at the door only; there's no online advance purchase. The venue is connected to Turf's Restaurant & Bar, so you can grab lunch overlooking the show floor without leaving the building.

The show typically runs Wednesday through Sunday, giving you flexibility to visit on a weekday when it's less crowded or on the weekend when the whole family can come.

Tips for First-Time Visitors

Come with a plan. If you know what type of boat you're interested in, do some homework on models and pricing before you arrive so you can have informed conversations with dealers. If you're just browsing, walk the entire floor before circling back to anything that caught your eye.

Wear comfortable shoes — you'll be on your feet for a while. Bring a notebook or use your phone to track model numbers, pricing, and dealer contact information. And don't be afraid to negotiate. Show pricing is real, but there's often room to talk about trade-ins, rigging packages, and delivery timing.

The Portland Boat Show is also a good place to start if you're new to boating entirely. Dealers expect questions from first-time buyers and most are happy to walk you through the basics — hull types, engine options, trailer vs. mooring, and what size boat makes sense for how you plan to use it.
