Vermont Breweries 2026: Hill Farmstead, Heady Topper, and the State's 59 Breweries

May 4, 2026J Tarbox4 min read

Vermont has the smallest population of any New England state — about 645,000 residents — and the fewest breweries (59 in our database). But the state's reputation in the craft beer world is enormous. The Alchemist's Heady Topper helped invent the New England IPA category in the late 2000s. Hill Farmstead has been ranked the world's best brewery multiple times by RateBeer. Lawson's Sip of Sunshine has spawned regular release-day lines.

This is the Vermont cluster of our New England Breweries 2026 pillar guide.

The legends: Vermont's national-reputation breweries

A short list of Vermont breweries that built national reputations on word of mouth and beer-trading culture:

  • The Alchemist — Stowe, makers of Heady Topper and Focal Banger. The brewery that arguably invented the New England IPA style as we know it.
  • Hill Farmstead Brewery — Greensboro Bend, in the rural Northeast Kingdom. A pure destination brewery — no distribution, no taproom seating in the traditional sense, just a buy-and-drive-home model that has nonetheless earned multiple "world's best brewery" rankings.
  • Lawson's Finest Liquids — Waitsfield, on Route 100 in the Mad River Valley. Sip of Sunshine is the year-round flagship. The taproom is a destination on its own.
  • Foley Brothers Brewing — Brandon

Burlington and the Lake Champlain region

Burlington has the densest brewery cluster in Vermont, with several within walking distance of one another in the Old North End and South End:

The NEK is rural by Vermont standards, but punches above its weight in beer:

The Manchester/Bennington area and the Brattleboro region have their own brewery clusters:

The 2026 Vermont beer-event calendar

Vermont's defining beer event is the Vermont Brewers Festival 2026 in Burlington's Waterfront Park. 2026 marks the festival's 30th annual edition — the longest-running state-level beer festival in New England. Tickets typically sell out weeks in advance.

The industry-side counterpart is the Vermont Craft Brewers Conference in Burlington in November.

FAQ

Why does Vermont punch so far above its weight in craft beer? A combination of small-batch culture, easy access to high-quality water, a robust hop-growing tradition, and the early-2010s rise of word-of-mouth-driven "destination beer" tourism. The Alchemist's Heady Topper went from local cult favorite to nationally famous via online beer trading.

Is Heady Topper actually that hard to find? Less than it used to be. The Alchemist runs distribution to a wider radius now and the Stowe taproom releases regularly. But during peak periods (especially fall foliage season), it can still sell out quickly.

Can I visit Hill Farmstead? Yes, but the model is different from a typical taproom. They're open Wednesday through Saturday for retail growler/bottle sales, with limited on-site consumption. The drive to Greensboro Bend is genuinely remote — plan accordingly.

When is Vermont Brewers Festival 2026? Saturday, July 18, 2026 in Burlington's Waterfront Park. Tickets are typically released several months in advance and sell out fast.
